Drawing Marathon - Icons of New York
September 2 - 12, 2008
Week 1: Tuesday 2 - Saturday 6, 9.00AM - 6.00PM
Week 2: Monday 8 - Friday 12, 9.00AM - 6.00PMCarole Robb
This will be an intensive two-week drawing course based on The Icons of New York.
Icons can become objects of passion for the culture they're born into but they can also turn into the world's passions. When that happens, even those who haven't actually seen them become familiar with them, thruogh photography, film and television. This is how the Icons of New York have captured the world's imagination.
We will concentrate on five NYC icons - Broadway & 42nd Street; the Empire State Building; Grand Central Station, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.
WEEK ONE: Each morning we will work from direct observation of one of the Icons. We will make small drawings using colored marker pens. Each afternoon, we will work in the studio on a larger scale, working from the memory of the morning's visual sensations and using large color oilsticks.
WEEK TWO: We will be based in the studio for both morning and afternoon sessions. We will use the memory drawings and the observation drawings as information sources to produce one definitive and large drawing. This final drawing will embody the student's feelings about these Icons and icons in general - are they objects we marvel at, or are they simply dead stones?
This Marathon is designed to encourage independence and self-motivation and to paying considerable attention to your own voice. It will assist the student's pursuit and development of personal themes for his/her work and professional practice.
Individual critiques will occur on a daily basis with group critiques at the end of each week.
