Drawing Marathon
June 2 - 13, 2008
Monday - Friday, 9am-6pm
Joe Santore with Eric Holzman
Students will be working perceptually from the figure and still-life set-ups. The class will focus on spatial relationships and the use of geometry to create solid structures that interact across the plane from edge to edge. Through geometric relationships the power and complexity of shapes are revealed and spatial connections discovered. The idea is to create a dynamic tension that resonates throughout the composition in an attempt to transcend the subject matter and push toward a more powerful interpretation of reality.
Students will be encouraged to experiment with a wide variety of mark making. from the power and poetry of lines, to blips and blops of wet medium off the end of a brush. Marks can pile up to create mass and dissolve edges. Space can be fluid and alive in the light; light can influence the weight of forms or help them defy gravity. Sound, speed and color can find their way into a simple charcoal or pencil drawing.
There will be impromptu critiques and discussions through out the two weeks but the main focus of the class is hard work.
The cost for this Marathon is $1,625
