In my painting, I am inspired by a moment of heightened consciousness as a young boy. This occurred one evening in the late 1950s at an officers' club on a Gulf Coast naval base where my father was stationed: a large rooftop veranda, a balustrade, a meal with family; the breezy moon, full, with an up-close look through binoculars -- the kind that swivel atop a stand riveted to the ground; some land way below, then the ocean. We moved to Paris for the next five years, a period when I first began to draw seriously. Then, back in the States in the mid-60s, twelve years old and living in New York City, I began occasionally taking the ferry with my father to Governors Island, and did so over the ensuing twenty years. Around 1980, a few years out of art school and painting on my own, I slowly began to realize that finding myself again at an officers' club on a military base was the kind of coincidental event that was part of a process which confirmed the meaning for my art of the initial boyhood experience. Currently in my mid-fifties, when after a long hiatus I returned to the Island this summer '07 in the context of a residency with other alumni from the NY Studio School, I found the land and architecture too immaculate to nurture a dream. So paint and brush continue to find their way through memory to the original impetus, beyond the Island of cropped lawns, smooth brick, and white lacquered wood.
