The New York Studio School welcomes applicants who show innate qualities of mind and sensibility, in addition to a serious commitment to their work. The student who comes to the New York Studio School has a genuine need for the questions of art, rather than a desire for prosaic answers.

Each program has specific application requirements, as outlined below. It is the responsibility of all applicants to ensure that they have read the requirements fully and completed the necessary paperwork.

 

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they have read all the requirements for application for the specific program they are interested in, as such requirements vary from program to program. Completed forms and all accompanying materials should be sent to:

MFA Application

Deadline: February 15th

Late applications will reviewed on a case by case basis; please note that late applicants may not be eligible for Financial Aid. 

MFA Candidates are accepted exclusively for enrollment in the Fall semester.  Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree, or its equivalence, to be considered for Admission. 

Forms must be printed and mailed to the New York Studio School at the address provided on the Application.

Completed applications include: the Application Form; two required essays; a $75 non-refundable Application Fee; two Letters of Recommendation; twenty jpeg images of student work on a CD or flash drive; image list to accompany the images; and official transcripts from all previous institutions that resulted in the applicant's undergraduate degree.     

Detailed instructions regarding the above components are available as part of the Application Form.  Partial applications will not be considered.

Prospective candidates will be invited for an interview with the Admissions Committee.

Certificate Application
The deadline for application for the Certificate program is February 15 for fall entry and October 1 for spring entry. Forms are not available for completion online, but must be printed and mailed to the School at the address provided. Applicants must complete the application form in full, including the required essays, and send it to the School together with the $75 non-refundable application fee ($90 fee for late applications); two letters of recommendation, and 20 slides or images on CD (10 drawing, 10 disciplinary). All slides must be clearly labeled with the applicants name; date of work; size and medium.

Marathon Application
While there are separate application forms for the Fall/Spring Marathons and the Summer Session, these applications can both be completed online. Applicants must complete the application form in full (either online or in hard copy), including the two required essays, together with the $45 non-refundable application fee. First-time applicants only must also send 10 slides or images on CD, 5 disciplinary and 5 drawing. All slides must be clearly labeled with the applicants name; date of work; size and medium. See "Digital Image Requirements" below for details regarding images on a CD. The application process for the Fall and Spring Marathon program operates on a rolling basis, but applications must be received at least two weeks prior to the first week of class. Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis as space in each Marathon remains open.

Summer Session Application

Applicants must complete the application form in full (either online or hard copy), including the two required essays, together with the $45 non-refundable application fee. First-time applicants only must also send 10 slides or images on CD, 5 disciplinary and 5 drawing. All slides must be clearly labeled with the applicants name; date of work; size and medium. See "Digital Image Requirements" below for details regarding images on a CD.

Hard copies of the application can be collected at the Front Desk of the School. Please click on the heading above to complete registration online.

 

Evening & Saturday Class Registration

Prospective students should complete the online registration form as soon as possible for any of the Evening & Saturday programs, as they are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no interview for participants in these classes. Full registration must include both the submission of a completed registration form and full payment. Registration forms that are received but are not accompanied by payment will be considered incomplete.

Digital Image Requirements

Images must be submitted as JPEG files on a CD that can be read by both Mac and PC operating systems. Submit the necessary amount images for each application. Please be aware that any images beyond the 20 limit will be omitted from consideration. Do not include detail photos of works. Slideshow and PowerPoint presentations will not be accepted.

Each JPEG may be no larger than 1600px in any direction. Image resolution must be between 72 and 100 dpi. Each file must be less than 1MB.

An inventory sheet must accompany CDs and file names should be numbered accordingly. Title files using the following protocol:

FAMILY NAME.FIRST INITIAL_1.jpg [e.g. ROTHKO.M_2.jpeg]

For each title, please include the title of the artwork, the size of the piece, the medium used and the year it was completed.

Please be sure to write your full name on the CD

 

Portfolio Requirements & Interviews (MFA & Certificate only)

All applicants residing within a 200-mile radius of the city who are called for an interview prior to admission to the program are required to bring an original portfolio of work. A maximum of 10 works will be considered, and should represent what the student believes is their best work. There is no specific size limit to works admitted for the portfolio review, but the applicant must be able to bring them to the School and leave with them. Works cannot be delivered to the School prior to the review, nor will applicants by able to leave items for later pick-up. The School is not responsible for any items that may be damaged in traveling to or from the School. Applicants should use their own discretion when considering what works to bring, and travel arrangements.
