Mercedes Matter, Painter, Writer, Founder and Dean Emeritus of The New York Studio School

Studied from childhood with her father Arthur B. Carles and several years with Hans Hofmann, and worked with Fernand Leger on two mural projects. Founding member of American Abstract Artists. Worked several years on WPA projects. One-person exhibitions include Tanager Gallery, NY; Yale Norfolk, CT; Washington Art Association, CT; East Hampton Center for Contemporary Art, NY; The New York Studio School; and Salander-OšReilly Galleries, NY. Collections include Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC; Delaware Museum of Art; Parrish Museum; Weatherspoon Gallery, NC; and Whitney Museum of American Art, NY. Awards include Distinguished Teaching Award, College Art Association; Gottlieb Foundation Grant; Ingram Merril Grant; and Tiffany Foundation Grant. Teaching experience includes the Philadelphia College of Art; Pratt Institute, NY; and New York University. Ms. Matter died in 2001.
