Art Historian and Biographer. Author of Frida: a Biography of Frida Kahlo, (Harper Perennial, 2002); Frida Kahlo: The Paintings (Harper Perennial, 1993); Mary Frank (Harry N. Abrams, 1990) and Arshile Gorky: His Life and Work (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2004), nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2004. Recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship (1996) and currently writing a biography of sculptor Isamu Noguchi.
