Robert Smithson 2.0 - (And a Tribute to Nancy Holt)

This panel discussion will focus on the pioneer of earthworks, and is concurrent with the show "Robert Smithson in New Jersey," Montclair Art Museum, NJ, February 23 - June 22, 2014.

Jack Flam: President of the Dedalus Foundation, and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Art and Art History, Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center, CUNY; Editor, The Collected Writings of Robert Smithson; co-author, Robert Motherwell Paintings and Collages: A Catalogue Raisonné, 1941-1991; Author of numerous books, catalogues, and articles on 19th and 20th century art, including Matisse: The Man and His Art, and Matisse and Picasso: The Story of Their Rivalry and Friendship.

Yasmil Raymond: Curator, Dia Art Foundation, NY, since 2009, where she has organized exhibitions and projects with artists Thomas Hirschhorn , Jean-Luc Moulène, Yvonne Rainer, +Ian Wilson, and Robert Whitman, among others. Raymond is currently organizing, with Philippe Vergne, the retrospective Carl Andre: Sculpture as Place, 1958-2010, to open May 2014 at Dia:Beacon.


Phyllis Tuchman: Critic; curator of Robert Smithson in New Jersey, Montclair Art Museum, NJ. Tuchman writes: "it is now clearer than ever how intertwined his sculptures, drawings, photographs, and films are with the sites that inspired them as well as his writings that serve as their subtext. Robert Smithson died 40 years ago."
