The faculty and students at the New York Studio School believe
in the importance of drawing as the basis of understanding one's
experience of the world, and that drawing is the most direct route
to the examination of the language of painting and sculpture. With
this in mind, the Drawing Marathon was developed in the Fall of
1988 by Graham Nickson,
Dean of the School. Sculpture and painting marathons were developed
soon after.
Held in the first two weeks of each semester, the Marathon is an
intensive, all-day program which gives the student the experience
equivalent to a semester's drawing or sculpture course in most schools.
The Marathon is particularly helpful to beginning students as they
are able to build upon this experience when they start the semester's
regular program.
The Marathon is comprised of several ateliers, taught by regular
faculty and visiting artists who are present for the entire two-week
session. Marathon faculty are painters and sculptors who are particularly
passionate about issues in drawing and sculpture. The strength of
each atelier lies in the individual approach of the faculty member.
Although the experience of working from perception is thefocus of
most ateliers, some have explored three-dimensional or non-objective
drawing. Faculty are encouraged to work as well during the Marathon,
because the experience of working beside a mature artist deepens
the awareness of the student.
The level of commitment reached by students during the Marathon
is extraordinary. Here, students confront exercises with vigor and
intensity, showing that they are equal to the fierce demands of
concentration and stamina required during this program. The Marathon
ends with an all-school viewing of works and a reception, which
encourages an exchange that broadens the experience of the individual
student.
This unique program, with its intensity of focus, has had a profound
impact on art education nationally and internationally. It has been
featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal,
Artnews, and Modern Painters.
Marathons in Painting are also offered in the Spring and Summer.
In addition to being part of the full-time program, application
to the Drawing Marathon is open to beginning and advanced artists
regardless of their school affiliation.
Application for the Fall or Spring Marathon is available online. Admission for the Fall and Spring Marathons follows the same requirements and procedures as the full-time
program. The deadline for application is two weeks before the first
day of the Marathon. The correct date for the deadline is on the
online application form. Fees for the ten-day course must be paid in full upon registration.
