Drawing Courses

Monday Evening Drawing with Ron Milewicz
June 16 - July 14, 6:30 - 9:30PM

No class: 2/18 & 3/24

The focus of this course is the fundamental issues of drawing directly from observation. Working from the live model, students will explore how the complex act of looking can be translated into pictorial terms. Projects use a variety of drawing mediums in both small and medium scale works.

To the first class bring: pencils, soft vine charcoal, Mars plastic eraser, masking tape and 4 sheets of good quality paper (22 x 30 in., 90lb. Saunders Waterford Cold Press).

Saturday Morning Drawing with Michael Meehan
June 21 - July 26, 10:00AM - 1:00PM

No class: 7/5

This course will address issues fundamental to drawing, including how forms in space relate to each other and to the whole. Students will explore the experience of looking in search of a compelling image, while working from the live model. All levels are welcome to this class, especially beginners.

Materials: Pencils; soft vine charcoal; Mars plastic eraser; masking tape and good quality drawing paper (22" x 30", 90lb. Saunders Waterford cold press).

Painting Courses

Saturday Afternoon Oil Painting with Clintel Steed
June 21 - July 26, 2:00 - 6:00PM

No class: 7/5

The objective of this class is to create a synthetic painting from transcription drawings. These classes will focus on creating one major drawing and one painting, working from an initial visit to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We will try to take what we learn at the Museum and translate it into our own work. At the Museum, we will look for composition, emotion, color, theme and structure, as well as how the figure fits into an environment. We will examine what it means to spend time on two pieces of work.

On June 21st, the first day of class, we will be at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each student will choose a piece of work from the 19th Century or Modern collections that incorporate a figure. Students will draw on 18" x 24" paper with pencil.

The following weeks will be spent in the studio, beginning to work on a painting based on the previous week's drawing. We will start painting from the model and set-up. This painting will attach the same structure and themes from the drawing made at the Museum. The painting should be at least 48" x 48".

There will be an end of class critique on June 28th, and a final critique on July 26th, the last day of this course.

Materials: 18" x 24" paper; drawing board; pencils; glass palette; full palette of oil paints; brushes; minimum 48" x 48" canvas, gessoed.

Sculpture Courses

Saturday Morning Sculpture with Jock Ireland
June 21 - July 26, 9:00AM - 1:00PM

No class: 7/5

Students work in clay from a live model developing (through doing, not talking) an understanding of what sculpture is, what the peculiarities of figure sculpture are, how figure sculpture fits into the history of art and the contemporary scene.  Many of the ideas that come alive in the class are just as important for drawing and painting.
