The New York Studio School Pre-College program is an intensive three or four-week session for students ages 14-18, offering an experimental in-depth approach to drawing, painting and sculpture. Trips to museums, galleries and artists' studios are also a major component to the program.

Students will experience discovery of their own potential as artists in a setting that integrates tradition and the present moment of art.  Aside from developing their skills, Pre-College students develop a unique attitude towards artistic growth: with creative hard work and an optimistic outlook, the past can be fruitfully studied and integrated into the living, personal present.

With small classes, faculty will be available to support students' challenges and individual needs. Students developing portfolios will meet with faculty members who are familiar with the portfolio review process for college admissions. Classes will include drawing from the nude model, drawing from the landscape, and explorations in sculpture.

The Pre-College program was created in the belief that the New York Studio School is an ideal place for young students to come into the mature art world, with eyes open to the moment's challenges and potential.  The Program is designed to be fun and empowering for all, regardless of background or level of skill.

A sample day:

10:00               Meet at NYSS; travel by train to Central Park West.

10:45 - 11:30  Draw in Central Park.

11:45 - 1:00    Draw from sculpture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

1:00 - 2:00     Picnic in park/ cross back to West Side subway

2:30-5:00       Work in NYSS studios on painting or sculpture, integrating studies from nature and art in Museum.

Facutly members: Jill Nathanson & Josef Zutelgte

The small groups will coalesce around work in the studios, drawing in the museums and out of doors and exploring the New York Art World. All students will draw in the mornings, then break up into painting and sculpture concentrations for the afternoons. The morning drawing might be in the studios, at the Met Museum or in Central Park.

In the afternoons, students will work on either painting or sculpture projects that will be on-going throughout the week. The afternoon Painting class will work with acrylic or oil paint on canvas to extend students' understanding of tone into painting tonal color.  Pure color modeling, as opposed to tonal color will be studied.  Color dynamics and issues of composition and unity will be approached through  value and color studies. Students will paint from still life, the nude figure and landscape  Abstract and representation projects will focus on experimental approaches to color and space.

The afternoon Sculpture class will work on the development of form through response to experimental work with materials.

The first three weeks of Program will focus on developing students' eye, skill and awareness of the language of art making. The optional fourth week is a time for longer focused work on specific projects.  This is a time for students to work at their own pace with faculty on hand to advise.

For three or four weeks, teens will live as artists, experiencing New York as artists do:  a city teeming with art and art debate!
