The New York Studio School provides an alternative to prevailing
trends in American art schools. Since its founding in 1964, it has
provided students with a unique experience. The Studio School's
aim is to be instrumental in training young painters and sculptors
in their development as professional artists.
To this end, the School has established priorities of study and
a simplified curriculum to parallel an artist's normal working day.
On the basis of this day in the studio, with criticism by mature
artists and his or her peers, and with the further stimulus of evening
talks and seminars, the student is encouraged to discover what is
important to him or her.
The School provides an environment which encourages students to
sustain a continuity of work on their own. Only with such continuity
can they develop the powers of observation, the patience, the capacity
for total absorption in work so necessary to the life of an artist.
